“What is Gleaning?” Gleaning had its beginnings in Biblical days over 6,000 years ago. It was practiced then as a way to provide food for the less fortunate while maintaining the dignity of the recipient by allowing him or her to work for food. It literally means to gather grain left in the field by reapers. We are proud of the roots of gleaning and believe we are continuing a time tested tradition of working within our community to help the needy gather and distribute items that would otherwise go to waste.
“Who is CGA? Cascade Gleaning Association is a local, nonprofit group, meeting the needs of the community right here in Snohomish County. Local supermarkets, farms, businesses, manufacturers and restaurants donate food, clothing and other items to be picked up, cleaned and distributed by the association. Our members glean perishable and non-perishable items to distribute to low and very low income families, the disabled, unemployed, underemployed, single parents and any neighbor in need. Each member family works 3-5 hours per week in exchange for food and other essential items, thus meeting needs while encouraging a strong work ethic and preserving self esteem. CGA members have many years experience. We are a well organized team with procedures, transportation and a communication network in place. CGA also works with other local nonprofit organizations such as food banks and the Gospel Mission. We are proud to work together to reach our community in need.
